Its small size (approx. 20 x 20 in) provided scope to easily change the dynamic of the composition simply by the swish (splurge or splotch) of the brush. This little painting was pivotal in the developing experiment engaged at this time. Something certainly did ‘happen’ which was greater than anything I could consciously muster: the tension between dark and light, the interplay of foreground, background, muted and vibrant colours. In other words – I didn’t get to this by thinking (and that made it all the more interesting). I’d never painted anything like this before (and likely never will). The original name assigned to this series was ‘Rectvoids’. The intent was gesturing towards shapes that were trapezoid but made oval. The name could have been ‘Trapezvoid’ but this seemed too much of a mouthful. So, combining ‘rectangle’ with ‘ovoid’ (of a solid or a three-dimensional surface more or less egg-shaped) produced ‘rectvoid’. I’m not keen on this designation now (sounding as it does like a riff on descriptions of the eliminatory sphincter). This was my ‘breakthrough’ painting with oils using the magic ‘Schmincke Medium W’ which enables oils to be combined with water. I had dabbled with oils in late 2017 with very limited success (not surprising given I was such a newbie). However, practically, the traditional oil mediums initially used were doing my head in (and yes, a small painting space with limited ventilation didn’t help). Something certainly did ‘happen’ which was greater than anything I could consciously muster: the tension between dark and light, the interplay of foreground, background, muted and vibrant colours. In other words – I didn’t get to this by thinking (and that made it all the more interesting). I’d never painted anything like this before (and likely never will). The original name assigned to this series was ‘Rectvoids’. The intent was gesturing towards shapes that were trapezoid but made oval. The name could have been ‘Trapezvoid’ but this seemed too much of a mouthful. So, combining ‘rectangle’ with ‘ovoid’ (of a solid or a three-dimensional surface more or less egg-shaped) produced ‘rectvoid’. I’m not keen on this designation now (sounding as it does like a riff on descriptions of the eliminatory sphincter). This is one of my favourites from this series – primarily because of the colours (purple, orange and red–pink), and it reminds me of the 1960s (the decade during which I appeared). The shape of the elements felt exuberant and the four-quadrant cluster provided a template in which to explore the tensions of colour, size, foreground and background. I seemed to be easing further into the notion of painting for its own sake without the ‘burden’ of meaning.
